Why do you need a managed cloud?

Cloud promises

Today virtually all companies have some degree of progress in their public cloud exploration or adoption projects. Behind this is the pursuit of substantial benefits in IT operation, chiefly greater flexibility, speed, and innovation, without sacrificing control nor efficiency*. However, these promises do not become true by themselves: the cloud only eliminates the data center and physical infrastructure management, everything else must still be managed.

Why are cloud management services required?

Companies frequently do not have a full understanding of what is required to operate in public clouds and believe that its management is part of the infrastructure contract with traditional service providers. But in fact, this is not true, since it is not a managed platform, but one that must be managed by the client. Public cloud adoption requires redesigning IT architecture solutions and establishing new management and operation processes which demand specialized knowledge, quite scarce in the marketplace.

As a result, there is a strong propensity for companies to hire managed services providers to accelerate the transition to public clouds and the acquisition of expected benefits. So much so, that industry’s analysts like Gartner have added a new category in their analyses and studies for public cloud managed services providers.

Novis services

Anticipating this trend, Novis has been developing a managed services platform for the public cloud since early 2015. It includes a service catalogue which considers all that is needed to leverage these new technologies, through:

• – Solution design optimization for the adoption of new functionalities provided by the cloud, higher security, and accelerated benefit gains (“cloudify” the architecture).
• – Implementation of an operational model, based on specialized knowledge and tools optimized for public clouds which handle normal IT management activities, such a:
  • Security management.
  • Backups and recovery.
  • Monitoring.
  • Updates.
• – Implementation of an IT management service , that supports ITIL processes (helpdesk, incident and problem management, service request management, change management, and service level management).

Novis experience

We have been delivering cloud services since February 2016, having tested and fine-tunned them for eight clients who operate SAP in public clouds, most of which have their production systems there. We are now conducting proof of concept tests with four other clients, who we expect will subscribe to these services.

Currently we are offering services for SAP Business Suite on SAP HANA, SQL Server and Sybase, SAP S/4 HANA, SAP Business One and legacy systems on Windows and Linux platforms.

From what can be seen through the interaction with our clients, we are excited with the speed of public cloud adoption in the region.
