Adelco migrated its SAP S/4 HANA solutions to AWS with Novis

Adelco (Abastecedora del Comercio) is the leading wholesale consumer products sales and distributor in Chile. It supplies about 30,000 retailers not only in the country, but also in Bolivia, the southern region of Peru, and in Argentina’s Patagonia.

Established in 1976, Adelco is part of the Gibraltar holding, one of the most important economic groups in the country, led by the Paulmann Mast family.

With 14 business offices, Adelco works with a presales model to provide a speedy and reliable service, where the sales teams visit their customers, make presales, and coordinate the delivery from one of the 10 distribution centers strategically located throughout the country, according to the levels of service previously agreed.

Adelco was one of the first companies to incorporate SAP S/4 HANA, in 2015.  Novis has since been its strategic partner, responsible for SAP implementations and operation, as well as for other companies of the holding.

The migration project of its SAP solutions to AWS was carried out at the beginning of 2021.

Oscar Mancisidor Strange, Chief Technology Officer of the Gibraltar group, explains: “The contract period with a technology that was becoming obsolete was about to end, so we took advantage of the opportunity to switch from an on-premises platform to an AWS cloud service.  Novis, who was already in charge of Adelco’s SAP operation, presented the best offer in the request for proposals, besides having the advantage of knowing our platform and business.”

The objectives and scope of the project were as follows:

  • Make the most of new opportunities and advantages offered by the technological market, both in lower costs and better options to incorporate digital innovation in Adelco.
  • Have a flexible and scalable platform to support growth and new projects, as Adelco is in an aggressive expansion plan for the coming months.
  • Migration of SAP S/4 HANA ERP environments to AWS (DES, QAS, PRD, and Embedded FIORI), from IBM Power to a new infrastructure on AWS on Linux.

Oscar Mancisidor adds: “The migration period was nearly three months. The project was concluded successfully, with all systems migrated to AWS once the tests were run and without critical migration-related incidents. We managed to complete the project within the deadlines and with an excellent delivery, with an uneventful launch that was transparent to users, who only perceived a better response time.”

He states that Novis’ experience with SAP AWS migrations, along with their knowledge of the company’s platform, contributed to the success of the project. “Since we had recently implemented SAP MM a short while ago, the users already had their cases prepared, which facilitated the testing phase of this new project.”

“My evaluation of Novis’ services for the migration from SAP to AWS and its subsequent operation is satisfactory for the company. This new platform will make it easier to deploy the new projects that the business requires, with more speed and agility to meet its objectives.”

What would you recommend to others who are evaluating similar projects?

“I believe that if the service provider has the required knowledge and experience, this is a simple project. And I think another important point is to make sure you keep the access to SAP logon up to date so as not to impact user experience.”

Novis’ SAP solutions to AWS migration services are certified and it is at the forefront of multicloud SAP operation in Latin America. After more than five years of research and development and having developed its own automated platform that ensures a normalized operation, it has consolidated its SAP® solutions migration and operation services on the main public clouds.
